The news media and our politicians would have us believe that the current unrest spreading throughout the middle east is a struggle between…what? Radical Islam vs. secularism? Authoritarianism vs. greater democratic freedoms? East vs. west? Partly perhaps.
It may be worth considering however that something much simpler and historically common, combining the hubris of all ruling classes with the by now familiar “unintended consequences”, might be more responsible for driving events. A look at our own culture will tell you that we will seemingly put up with endless incremental infringements to our freedoms as long as we remain comfortable and well fed. Go hungry for a week, or a month, or a year however and you too will take to the streets demanding change, and not really concern yourself as to what form it takes.
Yeah I know. It’s MSNBC, and Dylan Ratigan can be a douche-bag. So sue me.
